Dictionary.com is an online dictionary web app that can be used to locate the definition and pronounciation of words. The app will display as many definitions as are generally accepted. Users could also play an audio bit of the word to understand how it is spoken. Users can indicate that certain words are one's favorite by clicking on a star, or they can research the origin of a word instead. Dictionary.com lists related words, forms, medical dictionary meanings, slang definitions, idioms and phrases for the word as well. The site has different tabs for a thesaurus, an app called Word Dynamo (compete by demonstrating how many words one knows), quotes, references and a translator app. The translator translates into many different kinds of languages from Afrikaans to Yiddish. Users can type in any phrase in any language, indicate the language and then specify what language they'd like to translate this into. Through the Dictionary app itself, users can simply type in any word and get a definition. They could also browse through some of the most popular word trends, words in the news and much more.
Every month there are over 50 million different users on Dictionary.com. It is the go-to place for words, definitions and more. The app is led by Shravan Goli the CEO of Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com has been applauded as one of Time's Top 10 back to school iPhone apps, and one of Cnet's Top 100 iPhone apps (at #7). The company is based out of Oakland, California.
Dictionary.com is the most comprehensive and robust application available in terms of word definitions, translations, pronounciations and more. It is pretty easy to use and contains a wealth of information.
The application spans many different features and offers a ton of information. It is a great resource. Unfortunately, the app's free version is very cluttered with advertisements which can be pretty distracting at times. There were also so pages on the FAQ that didn't lead to anywhere or to a Ask.com "page can't be found" page.
Users don't need to register in order to begin using many of the Dictionary.com features. However, users can register for an account by providing their email address and a password. The app also offers a speedy registration via inputting one's Facebook account instead. New accounts will also have to accept the app's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. With a membership, users can save their favorite words, share words with their friends and enjoy unlimited access to games and word lists on Word Dynamo.
Accessing Dictionary.com is free. There appears to be a premium version of the app available too, however, the page that is supposed to describe this app would not load completely at the time of this review. The free version of the app is supported by advertising revenue.
Dictionary.com is an excellent resource for students or for adults who encounter words that they'd like to know the definition of. Additionally there are games and other activities that can strengthen one's vocabulary.
